At the turn of the last century Opatija became the high-class retreat of numerous crowned and noble heads of Europe. Today the opulence and elegance of the time remain visible in the classic looking hotels and well tended parks along the sea-shore. They are all joined by the 12 kilometre long “strolling promenade” or Lungamore that hugs the coastline interspersed by large beaches and some charming old centres such as Volosko, plus many cafes and excellent sea-food restaurants.
