One of the best ways to enjoy a holiday in Croatia is to rent a Dubrovnik apartment. Travellers who approached Dubrovnik city in the past will have found an extraordinary sight: its walls a powerful image of man’s mastery of nature – the wild rock of the mountains behind, transformed into the sturdy walls. The earliest parts of the walls date from the 10th Century, but their modern form were largely built in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Work was started by the architect builder, Michelozzo Michelezzi, and the great Croatian mason Juraj Dalmatinac, whose work can be seen elsewhere, notably the Cathedral of Sibenik and the sarcophagus of St Anastasius in Split. When you stay in your Dubrovnik apartment, you must walk around the walls taking in the Monceta Fortress, the Bokar Fortress and St John’s Fortress – as you go around you have great views of the city’s red roofs, its towers and cupolas, and bustling squares.
If you manage to find a Dubrovnik apartment near the centre of town, you can enjoy your stay without really needing a car. Apart from the old centre, there are plenty of other things you can do near to your Dubrovnik apartment. Take a water taxi to the Island of Lokrum, where there is a Napoloenic fort, beaches for bathing, and where you can wander around Emperor Maximilian’s botanical gardens. Also a short ferry ride away from your Dubrovnik apartment are the Elafitski Islands, perfect for a day trip or for a relaxing and peaceful place to holiday for a week or two – stay on either Lopud or Kolocep Island.
Alternatively you may find an apartment near Dubrovnik, in which case you will really need to hire a car. Have a trip down the coast and take in Cavtat. There are delightful walks you can do around the centre which is almost like being in a museum; archaeological finds include the remains of a Roman centre, as well as ancient tombs and the remains of a Roman road above the town. If you want to take a longer trip from your Dubrovnik apartment, you can also drive out to the Peljesac peninsula and visit some of the best vineyards in Croatia around Dingac.
